“I realize it’s last minute, but I’m running a marathon tomorrow!” jokes Sharon with a twinkle in her eye. At 52, Sharon is an inspiration to all. She credits her youthful energy and zest for life, in part, to the healthy way she fuels her body.
And we all know our bodies change as we age.
But as Maya Angelou said, “Aging is an expected part of life. Growing old is not mandatory.”
Taking charge of our nutrition after 40 is a powerful way to embrace life, feel our best, and feel fantastic.
Here’s the juicy stuff that will keep you thriving:
Eat a Rainbow:
Think of your plate as a colorful masterpiece! Fill it with fruits and veggies of all colors – they’re packed with vitamins and keep you energized. Oprah Winfrey says, “You don’t have to eat out of a box. You can eat well. You can nourish yourself.”
H2O Your Hero:
Water is your BFF! Aim for eight glasses a day (more if you’re sweating it out at the gym). Feeling sluggish? Often, it’s just a sign you need to quench your thirst. As supermodel Cindy Crawford reminds us, “The best remedy for those morning wrinkles is eight glasses of water.”
Food with Superpowers:
Focus on nutrient-dense foods. Think lean protein like chicken or fish, whole grains like brown rice or quinoa, and healthy fats like avocados or nuts. These are the all-stars that keep you feeling full and energized. Michelle Obama puts it perfectly, “Let’s move! Let’s move our bodies and eat healthy food.”
Strong Bones, Strong You:
Calcium is super important for strong bones, especially as we get older. Dairy products like milk and yogurt are great sources, but don’t forget leafy greens and almonds!
Sunshine in a Bottle:
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Get some sunshine (safely!), or chat with your doctor about supplements.
Cheers, But Not Too Much:
We all love to unwind, but limiting alcohol is important for overall health. Aim for one drink a day, max.
Supplements: A Helping Hand:
A balanced diet is key, but sometimes extra help is good. If you need supplements like calcium or vitamin D, talk with your doctor.
Tame Those Troublesome Conditions:
Many women deal with health conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Eating well can help manage these! Focus on balanced meals, staying active, and getting enough sleep. You’ve got this!
