The word unconventional means ‘not based on or conforming to what is generally done or believed.’ The unconventional woman is a woman who has been in the making ever since women began to forge their way to freedom and equality. Fighting for the right to vote in 1920, the right to equal pay in 1963, the right for an education in 1972 . These are women who go against the grain of traditionalism and gender based bias and forge a path for others who think outside of the standardized box.

We think of women like Rosa Parks who refused to move from her seat in protest of injustice. It was conventional and normal for blacks to move and give way to the white man as they were the bottom of the human social chain. But one woman’s refusal to stay in a place where black people were demoralized and treated less than, sparked a movement and ultimately a change that people now read in history books.
Throughout history women have been deemed weaker, too emotional, solely procreators and incubators for the man’s seed and society’s flourishing but there are a few who have done the unconventional and stepped outside of the book to be history makers and pavers of MORE. More than a face and body, more than a cook and baby machine. It is when women tap into their potential and step out of the stereotypes that we have Madam CJ. Walker, the first female millionaire.
How can you become an unconvential woman?
It is not only history makers and millionaires that can turn the tide of the times. You too with your uniqueness, boldness, grit and confidence can pave your way for your family, community and generation by whatever dream, vision or desire you have. It doesn’t have to be something big to have a great impact but something that you are passionate about, something you believe in and something that you can leave behind for others to grow from. The best way to become an unconventional woman is to be yourself and never be hindered by fear. Everything that you can ever accomplish, ever wanted, is on the other side of fear.
