This heat is no joke, as much as I live in the Tropics I can never get use to the intense increase in temperature during the summer months. The cooler temperatures between October-March or thereabouts always seem to CAUSE ME TO FORGET and leave me unprepared for when the summer heat hits.
As women whether we are 20 or 40 better yet 50 we must, let me repeat, we must protect ourselves from the sun. We want to share a few tips with you on how to keep cool this summer while protecting the largest organ – our skin!Water – this is a no brainer. 60% of our bodies are made up of water (women ie) and so it is imperative for good hydration and proper functioning. The heat along with working up a good sweat will reduce this percentage and so keeping hydrated is paramount. Dehydration leads to poor performance and poor performance can have detrimental effects. Need I say more?
Moisturizer with SPF – I have oily skin and so I use to skip this step. 1. I thought I did not need added moisture because of my oily skin & 2. I found that moisturizers made me oilier , did someone say way too much oil… Until I realized I was using the wrong potion. Armed with new knowledge – oil free moisturizers containing SPF (sun protection factor) as much as 30-50 (FYI there’s only a 1% increase in protection between 30 & 50) has become a mainstay in my regime as well as I can say my skin’s new bff.
Ladies I cannot stress this enough – lack of moisture contributes to wrinkle formation and we cannot have that! So load up on the moisturizer especially when venturing outdoors. It will keep you wrinkle free as well as protected. Research has shown that sun damage can occur even when indoors so we recommend that once you cleanse your face morning or night (unless you use another night cream) apply your moisturizer with SPF. You will thank You for not skipping this step.
Best fabric for summer – while there are different schools of thought on best fabric to sport during the summer months I think the most popular is cotton. It is lightweight breathable and versatile enough for both day and evening wear. See more from this article.
Hairstyles – I know the go to nowadays are wigs, all types of wigs- long short and in between, curly straight and every variation one can find. Here’s my experience – “less hair is best wear”during the summer. And keep the hair away from the neck, allow the nape area to breathe… Also if you ever thought about changing up your hairstyle, here is your chance! Now is the time! We recommend sporting updos, pixie cuts, take a chance on braids but please give yourself the option of being able to sweep it into a bun or a style that removes the hair from your face.
Go out earlier than later – If at all possible get your business done in the early mornings before the sun is out in all of its “gloriousness”. Stay indoors as much as possible.
Wide brimmed hats – I think there just might be a stigma attached to wearing wide brimmed hats (it’s for old women) but with the passage of time and creativity becoming a necessity we see a wide variety of styles to suit just about everyone. Wear a hat if you do have to go on the road; it is added protection. There are ways that you too can make this creative for yourself. Why not visit Pinterest? There are many ideas there! That’s what I do…thank goodness for Pinterest!
Family time – Stay off the couches – during the week you may have a 9 to 5 and so weekend sharing is a family time staple for many. Rather than spending time outdoors with your loved ones why not have an indoor family get together where you play games or watch movies to pass the time. Our tip here is to do so “on the down low”. Not in the widely used sense of the phrase, but, off the couch – down low on the floor. Have you ever watched TV sitting on the couch when the heat is on??? There’s a lot of sweating going on…am I talking to myself? Take our advice – stay off the coach. You will be much cooler!
Sleep in the nude – HaHa! Who is with me on this one? My deepest fear is to be asleep naked (trying to keep cool) and a natural disaster strikes! Do you think about that? Will I have enough time to get dressed or will I have to run out stark naked? Whether you choose stark naked or otherwise, minimal clothing while asleep is essential to keeping fairly cool. If you opt for minimal vs sleeping in the nude, go with the tank top and boy shorts or choose nightwear just as comfy. If you are not concerned about a natural disaster then by all means – go ahead…sleep in the nude
A bonus tip: no spooning, transfer of each other’s body heat is definitely not sexy…We love each other, and we will understand.
Going commando has definitely been working for me cuz even when i shower b4 bed i still feel crazy hot…i use sheets to sleep rite through the year its a comfort thing..but lately ive been having to ditch em…i had that fear too enuh but i think the heat scared it away 😂gr8 tips
